Spare Some Change

Next time you see a sign that reads, "I am homeless, please spare some change," consider reaching into your pocket and leaving some change into that person's torn cup. Why? Statistics show that there is a one in three probability that this person is a veteran.

They loiter in the streets not only because of the government's poor decisions in the distribution of our tax money, but also because many of them may be mentally ill. Many veterans develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from what they witnessed during the war. Aside from psychological injuries, veterans may develop sicknesses from exposure to dangerous chemicals such as asbestos.

So when you see a homeless man, consider sparing him some change, whether or not he served in our armed forces. Many veterans have already sacrificed their lives for our country's wellbeing, yet they are not given the proper treatment they deserve. Although your change may not alter their lives, it is a temporary solution.
